In this weekly event hosted by One Persons Journey Through a World Of Books where we discuss what we’ve been reading this week (and, occasionally, what we haven’t).
As I’ve only just returned from a long international trip, my reading schedule has been in a bit of disarray. I have not kept up with my Deal me in! challenge and so have a fair amount of short story reading to catch up on. Book-wise, I’m also a bit behind (at least, according to Goodreads).
That being said, I have been reading! Here’s what I’ve recently finished:
- The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling – Started this collection of stories with my Deal me in! challenge, and decided to keep on reading on! Some of the tales I absolutely adored, but others I found rather… indicative of the time, shall we say.
- One Good Earl Deserves a Lover by Sarah MacLean – This was a fun book, but the premise was all kinds of unbelievable. I managed to suspend that disbelief for the first, oh, 300 pages? But it got to be a bit much by the end.
Currently Reading:
- The Boy with the Porcelain Blade by Den Patrick – I am only 23 pages into this, so it is still far too soon to judge! The only think I can say for certain? Patrick sure likes to describe clothing.
Deal Me In! update: Weeks 7-12
Since my last update, I’ve been drawing cards a plenty – but not always reading the books! Here’s what I’ve drawn and what I’ve read (in bold):
- Week 7: Ace ♣ – IV League by Margaret Stohl
- Week 8: Queen ♦ – Shoulders of giants by Robert J. Sawyer
- Week 9: Eight ♥ – Mowgli’s Brothers by Rudyard Kipling
- Week 10: King ♣ – Red Run by Kami Garcia
- Week 11: Nine ♠ – The Adventure of the Speckled Band by ACD
- Week 12 (this week): Four ♥ – Thistle & Thorne by Ann Aguirre

Currently Reading:
Shadow Study by Maria V. Snyder – Yup, I’m still reading this. It is good, but not the most engaging of books. I love the chapters featuring Valek, but the book is a lot of effort for me to pick up.
Recent Listens:
The Devil’s Heart by Carmen Carter – Really not a favourite, despite a narration by a great Star Trek actor. Not terrible but rather… boring!
Deal Me In! update
I’m taking part in the Deal Me In challenge this year, reading a story a week during 2015 as chosen by a deck of cards. See my full list of stories to be read here.
Last week, I dealt 2 of clubs for Automatic by Rachel Caine – I was surprised by my enjoyment of this tale, given my current not-so-great feelings about the Morganville books. This morning I dealt a 4 of diamonds for Prisons by Kevin J. Anderson and Doug Beason. Considering I didn’t enjoy the last Federations story that much, I am a bit nervous about this one…

I used to take part in this meme all the time and have really quite missed it! Shall be returning to this meme regularly over 2015.

Currently Reading:
All Fall Down by Ally Carter – I am really, really loving this book! As someone who has read absolutely every Ally Carter book this was no surprise. 😉
Currently Listening to:
Emissary by J. M. Dillard – This is narrated by the fantastic Nana Visitor who played Kira on the show. It is pretty similar to the first episode of the show, but there are some interesting and entertaining differences.

Up next from my TBR:
This Shattered World by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner – AT LAST. I have been DYING for this book and FINALLY it is in my hands!!! I adored These Broken Stars and highly recommend it.
Shadow Study by Maria V Snyder – I loved Poison Study series (though not the last book, I’m afraid) and am really excited that Snyder has decided to continue with Yelena’s story. Hoping that I won’t be at a disadvantage not having kept up with her other series in the same universe.
Deal Me In! update
I’m taking part in the Deal Me In challenge this year, reading a story a week during 2015 as chosen by a deck of cards. See my full list of stories to be read here. My first card of the year was a queen of hearts which gave me an Ally Carter story as well – Huzzah! I read her “A Gallagher Wedding” and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The only reading I’ve gotten done lately was during the
Dewey’s Readathon – which was wonderful and fabulous and I
cannot wait for the next one. But that said, I wish I had had more time to read this week!
Currently Reading:
- Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead – For some reason I am having trouble getting into this. First time that’s happened with a Mead book…
Finished during these past two weeks:
- Defiance by Lili St. Crow – Good, but not great.
- Vampire Academy Graphic Novel by Richelle Mead – While I’m still not a graphic novel person, I really did enjoy this!
- Chain Reaction by Simone Elkeles – This book was what us fandomites know as crack. It falls into the so-bad-but-so-good-for-me category.
Up next from my TBR pile:
- Blue-Blooded Vamp by Jaye Wells – I ADORE this series so I am both super excited to see how it ends and super sad about never getting to read another book about Sabine!!

Happy October everyone! Tis the season for themed challenges and readathons, and I know a lot of you are reading spooky and paranormal books this month. I, for one, tend to read those sorts of books all the time, so I’m still trying to work out how to make this October a little different for me…
Currently Reading:
- Sea Witch by Virginia Kantra (goodreads) – I started reading this book months ago and am trying to finish it now. I put it down meaning to get back to it, but fell into a funk. Not sure if I am in the mood for PNR right now, but I’m giving it another go.
Finished these past two weeks:
- Darkness Falls by Cate Tiernan (my review) – I really enjoyed this book! I was actually rather surprised by how much I liked it, seeing as how “meh” I was about the first book.
- Breathe by Sarah Crossan (goodreads) – My review for this one will be out this week. BAD SCIENCE warning, people.
- The Calling by Kelley Armstrong (goodreads) – WHAT TOOK ME SO LONG?? This book was fantastic – albeit not as mind-blowing as Kelley’s previous YA novels.
Up next from my TBR pile:
- I want to do something extra spooky for this Halloween, so I think I will be reading Zombies Don’t Cry by Rusty Fischer (goodreads) next. Hopefully I will get that done by this Friday, as I have other books planned for Dewey’s Readathon (whoot!) this weekend.
Hope you’re all reading books you love – and hope everyone is signed up for the Readathon this weekend!
