Eighteen year old Lexi Wentworth is cursed. For as long as she can remember, she’s spent every night swimming. If she doesn’t, she’ll regret it – simply walking will be agony, as if she’s stepping on shattered glass. Her body craves the water, demands the water, until she can’t say no.

But it’s not the swimming that troubles Lexi. It’s the singing that goes with it.When she turned sixteen, her siren song killed the only boy she’s ever loved. Now, she avoids the popular shores of the Pacific in favor of a long forgotten lake up in the mountains, where she can swim and sing in peace, far from the population of her oceanside home.

Until, that is, Cole Mills discovers her lake. He’s new to Lincoln City High, and he doesn’t know about Lexi’s reputation as an ice queen – a reputation she’s carefully cultivated to keep everyone around her safe. He pushes her, talks to her, forces her to dream of what life could be like if she weren’t a siren.

Lexi can’t stop herself from warming to him, from falling for him. Soon, he’s demanding answers, following her to the lake, unknowingly risking his life. How can she keep him safe when the one thing she wants most – to hold him close – will endanger his life?

This book sounds fantastic.  I absolutely love the idea of a cursed heroine who can’t be near her new boyfriend for fear of hurting him.  It’s inverse Twilight and makes me want to go out and buy it right now. And aren’t the colours on this cover simply stunning? Are those tatoos or scales on her legs? *is intrigued*

Monday Reading (August 30th, 2010)

It’s Monday! What are you reading this week? is a weekly event now hosted by One Persons Journey Through a World Of Books where we discuss our week of reading!

Currently Reading:

  • Unholy Ghosts by Stacia Kane – I have been trying to read this book for the past 3 weeks but only seem to manage a page or two at a time.  It sucks, because I know it is a good book but I just can’t seem to get through it.  May set it aside as it is sucking away my book-loving soul bit by bit.

Finished this week:

  • TimeRiders by Alex Scarrow – I really didn’t think I would enjoy this book as much as I did!  It is like a friggin’ action movie – complete with Nazis, scenes in the Titanic and flesh-eating zombies (er, kinda zombies anyhow).

Up next from the TBR pile:

  • Linger by Maggie Stiefvater – NEED WANT MUST READ THIS THING.  I blame Unholy Ghosts (*cough* and, sure, now I feel guilty for blaming a perfectly good book.)

Waiting on Wednesday: Pink by Lili Wilkinson

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that are being eagerly anticipated.

Pink by Lili Wilkinson

Pink by Lili Wilkinson Goodreads – YA
February 8th 2011 by HarperCollins Publishers
The pink jumper was glowing in my grey bedroom like a tiny bit of Dorothy’s Oz in boring black-and-white Kansas. Pink was for girls. Ava Simpson is trying on a whole new image. Stripping the black dye from her hair, leaving her uber-cool girlfriend, Chloe, behind. Ava is quickly taken under the wing of perky, popular Alexis who insists that: a) she’s a perfect match for handsome Ethan; and b) she absolutely must audition for the school musical. But while she’s busy trying to fit in – with Chloe, with Alexis and her Pastel friends, even with the misfits in the stage crew – Ava fails to notice that her shiny reinvented life is far more fragile than she imagined.

For some reason I am really attracted to this book.  Probably because I love the idea of a character regressing to behaviour that is just not like them – a girl, out and proud, deciding to go backwards instead of forwards.  I am also looking forward to the whole “it’s high school, you can still change who you are” aspect of this book.  Hope this will be a great read!

Waiting on Wednesday – Esperanza by Trish J. MacGregor

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that are being eagerly anticipated.

Esperanza by Trish J. MacGregor
Goodreads – UF – September 14th 2010 by Tor Books

Tess Livingston met Ian Ritter at a roadside stop high in the Andes, waiting for a bus to the mysterious town of Esperanza. Tess is an FBI agent who remembers being on the track of a group of international counterfeiters. But she doesn’t remember booking a trip to Esperanza. Ian is a journalist who was planning to vacation to the Galapagos Islands. He, too, isn’t quite sure why he has a ticket to Esperanza.
Their meeting will change their lives forever. For they have been brought together because they hold the key in a mystical war between the kind spirits of the dead who guard humanity, and the hungry ghosts who exist only to possess living human bodies, and return however briefly to life. In the midst of this war, Tess and Ian will find a love that can transcend time, and a cause that not even death will overcome.

First off, this book is set in South America.  Honestly, how awesome is that?  Ian was on his way to the Galapagos – and being the Darwin/nature lover I am, that just makes me squee giddily.  Secondly, there’s the prospect of a mystical war-of-doom.  And finally, there is a dash of romance.  This book should be brilliant.

On My Wishlist (Aug. 7th, 2010)

On My Wishlist is a fun weekly event hosted by Book Chick City and runs every Saturday. It’s where I list all the books I desperately want but haven’t actually bought yet. They can be old, new or forthcoming.
I haven’t done an On My Wishlist in ages, and consequently have a ton of books I’d like to get my paws on.  Lots of epic fantasy below!
In a near-future world, seraphs and demons fight a never-ending battle. But a new species of mage has arisen. Thorn St. Croix is no ordinary “neomage.” Nearly driven insane by her powers, she has escaped the confines of the Enclaves and now lives among humans. When her ex-husband is kidnapped, Thorn must risk revealing her true identity to save him.
Trained from childhood to a life of servitude and espionage, Phedre Delaunay serves her master, Anafiel, as a courtesan and spy, ferreting out the dangerous secrets of the noble houses of Terre d’Ange. When she uncovers a treasonous conspiracy, however, her life takes on a new and deadly purpose. Set in a world reminiscent of late medieval and early Renaissance Europe, Carey’s first novel portrays a society based upon political and sexual intrigue.
While teenage werewolf Kalix MacRinnalch is being pursued through the streets of London by murderous hunters, her sister, the Werewolf Enchantress, is busy designing clothes for the Fire Queen. Meanwhile, in the Scottish Highlands, the MacRinnalch Clan is plotting and feuding after the head of the clan suddenly dies intestate. As the court intrigue threatens to blow up into all-out civil war, the competing factions determine that Kalix is the swing vote necessary to assume leadership of the clan. Unfortunately, Kalix isn’t really into clan politics – laudanum’s more her thing. Even more unfortunately, Kalix is the reason the head of the clan ended up dead, which is why she’s now on the l am in London. . .
Harper Blaine was your average small-time P.I. until a two-bit perp’s savage assault left her dead for two minutes. When she comes to in the hospital, she sees things that can only be described as weird-shapes emerging from a foggy grey mist, snarling teeth, creatures roaring.  But Harper’s not crazy. Her “death” has made her a Greywalker- able to move between the human world and the mysterious cross-over zone where things that go bump in the night exist. And her new gift is about to drag her into that strange new realm-whether she likes it or not.
The first title in a new fantasy series introduces the kingdom of Skala, where an usurper king claimed his young half-sister’s throne. To be born female into the royal line had become a death sentence. But as the king’s nephew, his sister’s only child, grows into manhood, it is unknown to both that the boy is actually the princess’s daughter, given male form by a dark magic to protect her until she can claim her rightful destiny.
Anluan has been crippled since childhood, part of a curse that has besieged his family and his home of Whistling Tor. But when the young scribe Caitrin is retained to sort through family documents, she brings about unexpected changes in the household, casting a hopeful light against the despairing shadows.   But to truly free Anluan’s burdened soul, Caitrin must unravel the web of sorcery woven by his ancestors before it claims his life—and their love…
