Esperanza by Trish J. MacGregorGoodreads – UF – September 14th 2010 by Tor Books
Tess Livingston met Ian Ritter at a roadside stop high in the Andes, waiting for a bus to the mysterious town of Esperanza. Tess is an FBI agent who remembers being on the track of a group of international counterfeiters. But she doesn’t remember booking a trip to Esperanza. Ian is a journalist who was planning to vacation to the Galapagos Islands. He, too, isn’t quite sure why he has a ticket to Esperanza.
Their meeting will change their lives forever. For they have been brought together because they hold the key in a mystical war between the kind spirits of the dead who guard humanity, and the hungry ghosts who exist only to possess living human bodies, and return however briefly to life. In the midst of this war, Tess and Ian will find a love that can transcend time, and a cause that not even death will overcome.
First off, this book is set in South America. Honestly, how awesome is that? Ian was on his way to the Galapagos – and being the Darwin/nature lover I am, that just makes me squee giddily. Secondly, there’s the prospect of a mystical war-of-doom. And finally, there is a dash of romance. This book should be brilliant.

Clarity by Kim Harrington
Goodreads – YA – March 2011 by Scholastic Point
Clarity “Clare” Fern sees things. Things no one else can see. Things like stolen kisses and long-buried secrets. All she has to do is touch an object and the visions come to her. It’s a gift.
And a curse.
When a teenage girl is found murdered, Clare’s ex-boyfriend wants her to help solve the case — but Clare is still furious at the cheating jerk. Then Clare’s brother — who has supernatural gifts of his own — becomes the prime suspect, and Clare can no longer look away. Teaming up with Gabriel, the smoldering son of the new detective, Clare must venture into the depths of fear, revenge, and lust in order to track the killer. But will her sight fail her just when she needs it most?
I really can’t quite pinpoint why I am attracted to this book. I think it might be the rather tragic feeling I am getting from it – what with “depths of fear, revenge and lust” on the menu and the rather intense cover. Honestly, that stare and the “She can see your secrets” tagline has me so creeped out I’m in love (and wow, does that sound weird).

Forsaken by Jana Oliver
January 7th 2011 by Macmillan Children’s Books
Riley has always wanted to be a Demon Trapper like her father, and she’s already following in his footsteps as one of the best. But it’s tough being the only girl in an all-guy world, especially when three of those guys start making her life more complicated: Simon, the angelic apprentice who has heaven on his side; Beck, the tough trapper who thinks he’s God’s gift, and Ori, the strikingly sexy stranger who keeps turning up to save her ass.
One thing’s for sure – if she doesn’t keep her wits about her there’ll be hell to pay…

I love the sound of this book. For starters, I think the heroine is going to be pretty damn kick-ass. It could be that I am still suffering from epic fail that was Hush, Hush (I swear to God, that book was written in the 60s) and am in desperate need of a girl who juggles romances and kills things. *sighs*
Anyhow, wish we had a few more details about this book. I mean, there’s obviously some sort of angel connection – what with the wings on the cover and the “angelic” apprentice. But, reading even further into the cover, perhaps a boarding school may be involved? *ponders*

Fallen Angel by Heather Terrell
YA – December 28th 2010 by HarperTeen
The first book in a dark, edgy new angel series about a girl who finds herself forced to choose sides in the battle between fallen angels, even if that means going against the boy she loves.
When Ellie Faneuil first sees Michael Chase she feels an instantaneous connection. But she does not realize how much they have in common, including the ability fly and to see what others are thinking – not to mention a taste for blood. Reveling in their new powers and their growing feelings for each other, Ellie and Michael are determined to uncover what they are, and how they got this way … together.
But the truth has repercussions neither could have imagined. Soon they find themselves center stage in an ancient conflict between fallen angels that threatens to destroy everything they love. And it is no longer clear whether Ellie and Michael will choose the same side.
In this electrifying novel Heather Terrell spins a gripping tale of soul-mates, supernatural powers and a truth that will change Ellie and Michael‘s world forever.
I know, another angel series. But this one sounds even more dark-depressing-and-bloody than some of the other angel series out there at the moment. Will certainly be giving it a shot. (That is, unless I am utterly sick of the angel trope by the time it comes out… let’s hope not!)

Personal Demons by Lisa Desrochers
Goodreads – YA – September 14th 2010 by Tor TeenFrannie Cavanaugh is a good Catholic girl with a bit of a wicked streak. She’s spent years keeping everyone at a distance—even her closest friends—and it seems her senior year will be more of the same…until Luc Cain enrolls in her class. No one knows where he came from, but Frannie can’t seem to stay away from him. What she doesn’t know is that Luc works in Acquisitions—for Hell—and she possesses a unique skill set that has the King of Hell tingling with anticipation. All Luc has to do is get her to sin, and he’s as tempting as they come. Frannie doesn’t stand a chance.
Unfortunately for Luc, Heaven has other plans, and the angel, Gabe, is going to do whatever it takes to make sure that Luc doesn’t get what he came for. And it isn’t long before they find themselves fighting for more than just her soul.
But if Luc fails, there will be Hell to pay…for all of them.
This book sounds great – and not just because I seem to have completely jumped aboard the ooh-angels!trend in YA. What drew me to Personal Demons was the same thing that drew me to Mercy by Rebecca Lim – the choice between heaven and hell not being as clear cut as we imagine. People have been squeeing non-stop about this book, and I hope it will live up to the ever mounting expectations!
BTW, this cover an older non-final one for the book. The new one just creeps me out, as the characters look about 30 (which would be fine if they actually were, ya know, 30).
