What are you reading on Monday? (Jan. 25th, 2010)

monday reading

It’s Monday! What are you reading this week? is a weekly event to celebrate what we are reading.

Books I am currently reading:

  • The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler – Absolutely adorable book, and quite serious despite the chick-lit cover.
  • A Study In Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle – Have set myself a challenge to get through the Sherlock Holmes series this year. Really good fun so far!
  • The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien – Yep, still at this. Haven’t actually picked it up in a week… but that is no reflection on the book itself!

Books finished this week:

  • Firespell by Chloe Neill – LOVED this book.  This one will probably make the Top Ten of 2010 list!

Reviews posted this week:

Young Adult – May 25th 2010 by St. Martin’s Griffin

Dana Hathaway doesn’t know it yet, but she’s in big trouble. When her alcoholic mom shows up at her voice recital drunk, Dana decides she’s had it with being her mother’s keeper, so she packs her bags and heads to stay with her mysterious father in Avalon: the only place on Earth where the regular, everyday world and the magical world of Faerie intersect. But from the moment Dana sets foot in Avalon, everything goes wrong, for it turns out she isn’t just an ordinary teenage girl—she’s a Faeriewalker, a rare individual who can travel between both worlds, and who can bring magic into the human world and technology into Faerie.

Soon, she finds herself tangled up in a cutthroat game of Fae politics. Someone’s trying to kill her, and everyone wants something from her, even her newfound friends and family. Suddenly, life with her alcoholic mom doesn’t sound half bad, and Dana would do anything to escape Avalon and get back home. Too bad both her friends and her enemies alike are determined not to let her go . . .

Books I am currently reading:

  • Firespell by Chloe Neill – picked this up as part of the Debut Author Challenge and am in love!  Neill writes the way my brain thinks, and, since I get on with myself rather well, I am really enjoying it!
  • The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein – I am reading this as a part of the LOTR readalong.  I only plan on finishing this book this week, as I won’t have much time to read this week!

Waiting on Wednesday – The Owl Keeper by Christine Brodien-Jones

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that are being eagerly anticipated.

The Owl Keeper by Christine Brodien-Jones
Young Adult – April 13th 2010 by Delacorte BFYR

Maxwell Unger has always loved the night. He used to do brave things like go tramping through the forest with his gran after dark. He loved the stories she told him about the world before the Destruction—about nature, and books, and the silver owls. His favorite story, though, was about the Owl Keeper.

According to Max’s Gran, in times of darkness the Owl Keeper would appear to unite owls and sages against the powers of the dark. Gran is gone now, and so are her stories of how the world used to be. Max is no longer brave. The forest is dangerous, the books Gran had saved have been destroyed, and the silver owls are extinct. At least that’s what the High Echelon says. But Max knows better.

Maxwell Unger has a secret. And when a mysterious girl comes to town, he might just have to start being brave again.

The time of the Owl Keeper, Gran would say, is coming soon.

Sounds absolutely amazing, involves owls and has a kick-ass cover. What more could you want?

Friday Finds – Pretty When She Dies: A Vampire Novel by Rhiannon Frater

Friday Finds is hosted over at Should be Reading where bloggers are asked to explain the growing pile of books on their TBR list by answering “What great books did you hear about / discover this past week?”

Pretty When She Dies: A Vampire Novel by Rhiannon Frater (Amazon)

Amaliya wakes under the forest floor, disoriented, famished and confused. She digs out of the shallow grave and realizes she is hungry… … in a new, horrific, unimaginable way… Sating her great hunger, she discovers that she is now a vampire, the bloodthirsty creature of legend. She has no choice but to flee from her old life and travels across Texas. Her new hunger spurs her to leave a wake of death and blood behind her as she struggles with her new nature. All the while, her creator is watching. He is ancient, he is powerful, and what’s worse is that he’s a necromancer. He has the power to force the dead to do his bidding. Amaliya realizes she is but a pawn in a twisted game, and her only hope for survival is to seek out one of her own kind. But if Amaliya finds another vampire, will it mean her salvation… or her death?

This one looks kinda violent – but should make for a good change!  I am kinda longing for some old-school, evil vampires!
