Hi there! I’m Kay: an opinionated book blogger enamoured with the world of novels. Reader of Speculative Fiction (the posh word for Sci-Fi/Fantasy) and Young Adult novels. Believer in the many uses of the towel, the science of deduction and other fandom in-jokes.

This blog has been closed since early 2016. To the publishers and writers: thanks for all the support over the years. To my readers and fellow bloggers: keep in touch!

Also in this series: Poison Study, Shadow Study

Yelena is a survivor. Kidnapped as a child, held prisoner as a teen, then released to act as a poison taster, she is now a student of magic. But these magic skills place her in imminent danger, and with an execution order on her head, she has no choice but to escape to Sitia, the land of her birth.

But nothing in Sitia is familiar. As she struggles to understand where she belongs and how to control her powers, a rogue magician emerges and Yelena catches his eye. Suddenly she is embroiled in a situation not of her making. And once again her magical abilities will either save her life or be her downfall.

Despite the turmoil, she's eager to start her magic training especially as she's been given one year to harness her power or be put to death. But her plans take a radical turn when she becomes involved with a plot to reclaim Ixia's throne for a lost prince and gets entangled in powerful rivalries with her fellow magicians.

If that wasn't bad enough, it appears her brother would love to see her dead. Luckily, Yelena has some old friends to help her with all her new enemies.

Thoughts: I absolutely adored Magic Study – this series is definite must!

We are introduced to the diverse, magical world of Sitia – and God is it an amazing place! I am not usually a verse-lover, but Snyder has a way of changing my mind. She also manages to incorporate a few subtle messages about poverty in a capitalist society – there’s no preaching, but she does use the fantasy world to make a point or two about our own society. It’s old school and totally made me smile.

Snyder manages to introduce a variety of different cultures and locations without bogging the book down with information. Same goes for the characters – although there were a lot of new faces, it was never overwhelming.

Luckily, Valek did manage to make his way into the book. I’d been worried about him, and although he is not as central to the plot as he was in Poison Study, he was equally as amazing. Seriously, this man gives me tingles.  *sighs* As for Yelena, she now officially joins Mercy (from the Patricia Briggs Series) as a female lead whose judgement I actually trust.  And that I like her is a lovely bonus.

Bottom line?  The Study Series is a must read!  The quality has been consistent as the series goes on – which is a rare gift nowadays. I’d recommend this to everyone I know – romance readers, literary fiction readers, mystery lovers, fantasy addicts… anyone and everyone!

Cover note:  The US have stunning adult trade paperbacks – which I have included in my reviews, even though I can’t seem to get my hands on any of them.  The series has quite a few editions, and Snyder has conveniently posted all the covers on her site so that you can choose your favourite.  ♥

In My Mailbox (Mar. 14th, 2010)

In My Mailbox is hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren (inspired by Alea of Pop Culture Junkie) and explores the content of your mailbox!

This was going to be a slow week – but I’m afraid a 3 for 2 deal at Waterstones got the best of me… shameful, I know.  🙂

Two books this week for The Book Depository – both of which came with lovely customer-designed bookmarks.  Twenty winners were selected, and have now been sent out in books across the world.  Take a look at the Winners Post at Bookdepository.  I had to include my favourite bookmark – which I fortunately received this week.  Those three birds you see to your left are feature on the bookmark by Jehanne Silva-Freimane from Latvia.  I just think it is hysterical and literary – awesome combination!

On to this week’s stash!

I got two YA Paranormal books this week.  Blue Moon by Alyson Noel has just been released here in the UK.  I liked, but did not love, the first in The Immortals Series, Evermore.  It’s paranormal hero, Damen, was a serious let down.  Hopefully he will improve in this book!

I also got a copy of Blue Bloods by Melissa de la Cruz – this series is only now being released in the UK, but has gotten a ton of publicity since its release.  I somewhat sceptical that I will enjoy this book – the Gossip Girl similarities are not something I like – but I will try to keep an open mind!

From Dead to Worse by Charlaine Harris joins my Sookie Stackhouse TBR pile.  It is the eighth in the series, but I have only finished 4 of the books!  I am not sure if I like the covers that feature characters from True Blood, but whatever gets people reading her series.  As much as I enjoy the True Blood TV series – the books are very different!

Angels of the Deep by Kirby Crow is a urban fantasy book mixed with some romance.    It is supposed to be very, very dark – which the cover definitely enforces.  Kudos to cover artist Analise Dubner for the great design.  It is as stunning in real life as I had imagined it.  ♥

So, how was your week?

On My Wishlist (Mar. 13th, 2010)

Bloody Good (Brytewood, #1) by Georgia Evans
This adorable ditty is a cross between PNR and historical fiction – vamps in a sleepy English town during WWII.

While the sounds of battle echo through the sky, a lady doctor has more than enough trouble to keep her busy even in a sleepy hamlet outside London. But the threat is nearer home than Alice knows. German agents have infiltrated her beloved countryside – Nazis who can fly, read minds, and live forever.

They’re not just fascists. They’re vampires.

Alice has no time for fantasy, but when the corpses start appearing sucked dry, she’ll have to accept help where she can get it. If that includes a lowly Conscientious Objector who says he’s no coward though he refuses to fight, and her very own grandmother, a sane, sensible woman who insists that she’s a Devonshire Pixie, so be it. Indeed, whatever it takes to defend home and country from an evil both ancient and terrifyingly modern…

The Laurentine Spy by Emily Gee
I have read quite a few amazing reviews for this book – apparently it is everything a fantasy book should be!  Romance, intrigue, attempted murder – oh my!

Following on from the success of Emily’s award nominated first novel, comes The Laurentine Spy. Two spies must work together to avoid being caught at whatever cost.

The Corhonase citadel is a place of virtue and debauchery. But nothing is as it seems, whether in the ballrooms and salons of the nobles’ Court or the catacombs beneath the citadel.

Saliel has many secrets; her spying is one, but her most guarded mystery is her magic. She walks a narrow path between discovery as a spy and being burned as a witch. With a sadistic Spycatcher closing in, Saliel and her fellow spies are tested to the limits of their endurance—they must trust each other, or die. Magic may be their only hope of survival…

Cover Alert! Ghost Town by Rachel Caine

I’ve just seen the cover art for the next-next (9th) Morganville Vampires book – and it is so gorgeous, I just had to share!  GHOST TOWN by Rachel Caine is going to be released in Hardcover in the US on November 2nd, 2010 – which is so exciting as I have been longing for hardcover versions of this series for a while! I will have to order it from there!

The fragile peace between humans and vampires in Morganville is in trouble, and when Claire takes drastic action, she’s put under serious pressure to re-establish the barriers that keep the town residents inside, and wipe the memories of those who leave. But working with her half-crazy vampire boss Myrnin means that things don’t always turn out as planned … and as the people of Morganville begin acting strangely, Claire and her friends must solve the mystery and try to put things right. But one by one, her allies are turning on her … even the ones she trusts most.

*squee*  I can’t wait to see what the UK publishers come up with!

ETA:  Also, if you are a Rachel Caine fan living in the States, make sure to check out the Smart Chicks Kick It Tour – which features lots of AMAZING YA Paranormal authors who are visiting 12 US Cities in September.  I wish they could add London to their list, but alas.  Other authors on the tour include Kelley Armstrong, Melissa Marr, Alyson Noel, Holly Black, Cassandra Clare, Rachel Vincent, Sarah Rees Brennan, Becca Fitzpatrick, Melissa de la Cruz,  Carrie Ryan and more! Check out their Facebook page for more details!
